We are a young, innovative and vibrant winery in the Ribera del Duero.
We are fascinated by the world of wine and the possibility of trying new things. For this reason Martin Berdugo is a winery for daring people, who are willing to take chances; our wines express the nature and individuality of the fruit of our vines, using the latest technologies while all the time respecting the traditional methods.
Our buildings are at the forefront of modern winery architecture in the Ribera del Duero. In 2005 the design, by the architects Vicky Daroca and María Viñé, was awarded the prize for the best European design in the construction category, by the prestigious German magazine Bauwet.
We are obssessed by our vines, we know that the only way to make high quality wines is to take care of and manage the vineyard during the whole year. All of our wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in our own vineyards.
In addition to the dry pruning done during the winter, we also do a strict green pruning and a cluster reduction, which makes our production way below the maximum limits permitted by the Consejo Regulador of the Ribera del Duero. This ensures higher quality fruit, which in turn ensures higher quality wine.
Just prior to the harvest we decide the quality and style of grapes by zone, so that we can select the appropriate grapes for each type of wine.
Our grapes are picked manually allowing us to choose the clusters we want to use. The fact that the winery is located within the vineyard guarantees that the grapes are in perfect condition when the are received.
The must is fermented in stainless steel vats, in a temperature controlled environment, using yeasts which occur naturally in the grapes. These yeasts ensure that each wine has its own character and individuality.
Our wines are aged in new American and French medium toasted oak barrels. To ensure that wines keep their full personality when they reach our clients, the wine is clarified using egg albumen and is briefly filtered befor being bottled. We avoid passing our wine through cold filtration, which sometimes means that the wines can have a little precipitation in the bottle.
We aim to make wines that are true to the nature of the land and the fruit. Our wines are for wine lovers. We are making wines true to the origin of the wines from the Ribera del Duero - prioritising the fruit in the flavors and the depth of the color. At the same time, not only do we try to improve with each harvest, but we also try to surprise the people who share our taste, our philosophy and our joy in our wines. This is why we have added a verdejo white wine to our portfolio - and our mb wine, our latest creation. Made with the most innovate cryomaceration techniques, each year brings a new surprise. We believe that to really be happy, we should always be able to enjoy surprises and new tastes.
The winery is ISO 9000:2004 certified, which guarantees the traceability of the product from the vine to the glass - while at the same time respecting the environment.
Bodega y Viñedos Martín Berdugo is a family run winery in Aranda de Duero, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero.
Our story starts in 1990 when we decided to set off on our viticultural journey. This journey is our illusion and dream to give a new meaning to the family land which holds so many family memories and sentiments.
It was then, trusting in the great potential of the newly formed Denominación de Origen de la Ribera del Duero, that Josefina Martín Berdugo decided to plant the vines, where they had been planted for over two hundred years by her ancestors. This decision was made with the support and collaboration of her husband Enrique and three children Antonio, Bruno and Pepa.
The first harvests of these "grapes of hope" were sold to other wineries in the Ribera del Duero, until finally in 2000, we built the winery and we started on our own journey in the exciting world of producing and selling Martín Berdugo.
Our winery is located on the banks of the river Duero, in the bend just before the Arandilla waters flow into the Duero. We sit on the Castilian meseta, 800 metres above sea level. The extreme climatological conditions make the Ribera del Duero one of the most remarkable and prestigious wine regions in the world.
The winery is in the centre of the vineyard, which is one plot of 104 hectares. A privileged land, formed from river soil, covered in rounded pebbles which hold the heat and humidity, thus enhancing the maturing process. This land gives our grapes their unique flavour and color. Our 87 hectares of trellised vines are the Tinta Fina or tempranillo variety, the emblematic grape of the Ribera del Duero.
